On Saturday Dec 12th, the Gearheadz robotics team from Lawrence High School hosted their first Lego League competition, a FIRST program. This was the first time the Gearheadz have hosted such a large event with 30 teams including teams from Lawrence’s Frost and Guilmette schools and others from neighboring towns. Over 25 Gearheadz team members and mentors, their friends and families, and even janitors came as volunteers. The event ran from 8am to 5:00pm, so some volunteers came as early as 6am to set up! The competition was loads of fun for everybody involved.

FIRST Lego League is a program for students from grades 4 to 8. Their task is to create a robot using Legos that perform various missions on a 4 foot by 8 foot playing field. Along with creating a robot, the team creates a presentation based on the season’s theme, which changes every season. This year, the theme was Trash Trek and it taught the students how to prevent the creation of trash, how to properly dispose of trash, and other lessons. Teams received information about the game and its rules in September to prepare for competitions in December.

After the final match of the day and several cups of coffee, closing ceremonies were held. The Gearheadz announced awards for best presentation, best engineering, sportsmanship, and more. The RoboKnights from North Andover won the Champions Award. Not only were awards given, but seven teams were announced advancement to regionals at WPI on Dec 19th.

Meet The Author

Monica Sim

Hello! I'm Monica Sim, 15 year old freshman at MST. In robotics, I'm here and there. I dabble in a bit of mechanical, but my official sort of "tag" for robotics is under the fundraising team. During the competitions, I'm in the safety team, pit crew, and the fundraising team. Usually cheering in the stands and freaking out when we do well. But outside of all the meetings, my main hobby is procrastinating to the ultimate max level. I also like to call myself a little advocate for self-love, self-improvement, and just living in the present. I try to write stories (Emphasis on try... Having a lot of goals, but being a big procrastinator is bad.) and I like to journal here and there as well. Both riding an elephant and watching all the animes in the world are on my bucket list. Yeah, so that's my little autobiography~
