On April 2nd and 3rd, the 1289 Gearheadz from Lawrence competed against 39 other teams from all around New England in Boston University’s Agganis Arena. This was their second FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competition of the 2016 season. At the closing ceremonies, the team was awarded the Spirit Award that recognizes extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit through exceptional partnership and team work.

This year’s game is called FIRST Stronghold. It consists of two alliances, containing three teams each, in which teams compete to gain the most points. With breaching defenses, scoring low and high goals, and climbing towers, this has resulted in the most difficult game FIRST has created so far.

Similar to previous years, the Gearheadz have been working diligently and have strived for success. Aside from building their robot, the Gearheadz hosted a 30-middle-school team FIRST Lego League competition in December and are preparing for the upcoming Lego League competition in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
